Rickettsia japonica causes Japanese spotted fever, mainly in the southwestern part of Japan bordering the Pacific Ocean and in Korea. Closely related strains appear to be widely distributed in far eastern countries, particularly within the range of Haemaphysalis hystricis ticks.
