Rickettsia heilongjiangensis was initially described in 1982 from outbreaks in Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China. This species is phylogenically clustered with both R. hulinii ( same province) and R. japonica, while closely related strains have been described in distant areas of eastern Asia.
