Rickettsia honei was initially isolated from patients with Flinders Island spotted fever (southeastern Victoria, Flinders Island and Tasmania). Further molecular study found a close relationship with the Thai tick typhus isolate TT-118, thus extending the geographic range of this species to include much of Australasia.
